Our top 10 tips for logo design.

Our top 10 tips for logo design.

Keep your logo design minimal.

Don’t overcomplicate things, keep things clean.

Consider colour psychology.

Remember certain colours can come across differently, for example red can come across as an angry colour, whilst blue can come across as a trustworthy colour.

Avoid the use of raster or clip art images.

Not only do raster and clip art images look cheap, if you haven’t been granted permission to use the artwork, you could be at risk of breaking copyright laws.

Make sure your logo is responsive.

Your logo should look as good at 50px as it does at 150px. Having your logo in a vector format (eps, ai) rather than just a low quality jpeg will mean the logo can be enlarged without loosing quality.

Don’t overdo the colour palette.

Avoid the use of multiple colours, personally I (the author) would suggest keeping your colour palette to around 3 colours, any more than this can really overcomplicate things when it comes to rolling out your full brand. However in some cases you can get away with more than 3, for example if your logo has an image of a rainbow, you could use each colour to compliment your branding as different title colours or shapes.

Use legible and adaptive fonts.

Your font selection is the second biggest decision you could make when creating your logo and brand, your chosen font will compliment your logo.

Don’t outline or box your icons.

Keep your icons free, let them breathe, don’t confine your icons to an outline or box them up.

Make it accessible for all.

In order for people with accessibility needs to view your logo, it needs to be clear to read and stand off your background. For example, if your logo is on a white background, be sure to use bold colours that stand out. Avoid any light colours such as yellow, lime, light grey etc. If it is on a dark background the logo needs to have colours that work well on a darker surface, such as bright orange, green, white, yellow etc. Just always keep in mind your logo has to be easily viewed on your background colour.

Don’t forget white space.

Logos are often surrounded by white space, this is so the logo is emphasised and clearly visible. The white space around your logo helps keep your logo separate from other elements, and the viewer is drawn to your branding not confusing it with other images.

Choose a transparent background.

Having your logo saved out with a transparent background is an important format to have. Your logo will be more versatile and can be used in many situations. By doing this your logo can be placed on any chosen backgrounds which can also be an image to expand your branding options.
